Darkwood review
My Pros:
- The sound design is absolutely fantastic and it made me feel uneasy throughout thanks to the terrifying atmosphere the sound design delivered to me.
- This game genuinely scared me because there’s always something lurking around the corner and in a way this did make me want to continue.
- There’s a decent amount of strategy included when you go out to scavenge for supplies and surviving a night does give off a very rewarding feeling.
- I found that the story kept me invested throughout and this is very impressive considering there isn’t a huge amount of depth to it.
- In terms of content the game has a decent amount for you to get to grips with and it somehow pulls you back in time and time again.
My Cons:
- There’s a few bugs you have to contend with every now and then but thankfully none of these are game-breaking.
- The difficulty curve can be a little problematic at times so if you’re looking for an easy challenge then you won’t find it here.
My final evaluation on Darkwood:
All in all games that truly frighten you are very few and far between because most of the time you tend to know already what’s going to happen next and this does take the scare factor down quite a bit. Darkwood is completely different though because it manages to scare the hell out of you at every turn even if you try and prepare yourself for it. I’m not exaggerating when I say then that the sound design in this game is some of the scariest I’ve ever come across and it stays that way throughout never letting you feel relaxed in the process. Surviving then feels that much more important and there is a decent amount of strategy included because after all your main aim is to survive another night by any means necessary. Surviving the night isn’t an easy thing to do though and if you’re not a fan of being challenged at every turn then this may be a problem for you because the difficulty of the game is unforgiving to say the least. In terms of content the game has quite a bit for you to sink your teeth into and even though I was frightened most of the time it still managed to keep me coming back for more. I think the story was one of the reasons that kept me coming back for more because even though there isn’t a huge amount of depth present here it still invested me a great deal and it did make me want to find out what happens next. At the end of the day then Darkwood is a horror masterpiece and it’s definitely one of the most scariest yet thrilling games I’ve ever played in this genre. Recommending this game then is very easy to do, but be warned you’re in for a ride that will be very difficult to forget especially when it’s time to go to sleep.
My score for Darkwood is 8.5/10.
